My work explores identity, spirituality and the human condition through vibrant African textile collage, inviting viewers to contemplate their lives, aspirations and spiritual connections.

Kwame Alorlete Akpokavi is a contemporary Ghanaian mixed-media artist whose work explores the intersection of identity, spirituality, and the human condition through vibrant African textile collage.

Born in Ghana, Kwame trained at the College of Art, Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) in Kumasi, Ghana, and later studied at Manchester University, UK. His early artistic practice focused primarily on sculpture, working in wood and clay to create forms that reflected his interest in materiality and the human experience.

In 2018, Kwame made a significant shift in his practice, refocusing his art career on environmental stewardship. He developed a unique collage technique that involves gluing and stitching pieces of African textile prints (Ankara) and found objects onto canvas. This innovative approach allowed him to address environmental concerns while celebrating African visual culture and pattern-making traditions. Using this technique, Kwame produced a collection of 12 pieces for a solo exhibition with the Warrington Museum & Art Gallery in the United Kingdom before returning to Ghana.

Since January 2021, Kwame has been working from his studio in Accra, where he creates distinctive works that fuse vibrant colors, intricate patterns, hidden details, and philosophical depth. His artistic approach invites viewers to contemplate their lives, aspirations, and spiritual connections, making his art a powerful medium for self-reflection and exploration.

Kwame's personal journey informs his perspective on life, humanity, and the art of making. He believes that all people have the capacity to become excellent human beings, enjoying fulfilled and harmonious lives by coexisting with all of creation. His work reflects these beliefs, using African prints, symbols, and patterns as a catalyst for critical analysis of humanity and the universe.

Beyond his studio practice, Kwame actively facilitates art workshops and events aimed at increasing the appreciation of art within the African context. His commitment to education and community engagement reflects his broader vision of art as a tool for transformation and understanding.
