Nathanäel Vodouhé’s Cérémoniels series offers a profound reflection on the relationships between ancestral memory, spirituality, and contemporary identity. Through a rigorous and highly structured pictorial language, the artist explores what he defines as a “cultural genome” — a system of symbolic codes and inherited knowledge passed down through generations, shaping the fabric of African societies.

The artist’s systematic use of pointillism moves beyond a purely formal choice to become a true language of memory. Each point functions as a unit of transmission, echoing cellular structures and processes of continuity. Through this method, human figures are transformed into sensitive cartographies of collective memory, revealing a relational understanding of identity rooted in lineage, belief systems, and inherited knowledge.

The recurring presence of the sacrificial animal situates the work within a spiritual reading of the world, where ritual operates as a form of mediation, protection, and regeneration. Far from any folkloric interpretation, Cérémoniels proposes a contemporary re-engagement with African ritual practices, affirming their vitality and their enduring capacity to inform present-day creation.

Through this body of work, Vodouhé positions painting as a space of critical reappropriation of African intangible heritage — a site where ancestral knowledge and contemporary inquiry intersect, opening a dialogue between past continuities and present expressions.
