About This Piece:

Framed in a 16.93 in × 14.76 in (43 cm × 37.5 cm) display, Bogolanfini—or Living Earth—presents an authentic piece of Malian mud cloth, hand-spun, hand-woven, and hand-painted using iron-rich fermented river mud and tree-bark dyes to embed centuries of Bamana geometry, symbolism, and cultural heritage into raw cotton. This piece features striking geometric motifs—combining dotted concentric circles with linear hatch designs—dynamically arranged across hand-joined strip-loomed cotton panels.
