About This Piece:
A Dan zoomorphic bird mask representing the hornbill, a creature of spiritual authority in Dan cosmology. The mask is defined by its dramatically elongated downward-pointing beak, dark burnished surface achieved through smoke treatment and oiling, and narrow slit eyes positioned high on the face. The crescent headdress is fabric-covered and adorned with two rows of cowrie shells — a pan-African symbol of wealth and spiritual power — with aged woven fabric lappets hanging at either side, remnants of a full performance costume. Among the Dan, zoomorphic masks (gle) embody specific spirits that appear during initiation and ceremonial contexts. The hornbill's prominence in Dan masquerade connects to its association with forest knowledge and ancestral communication.
