Kambey Akari is the Chief Curator and Director of Art Continum, a platform dedicated to documenting, presenting, and advancing the continuum of African artistic and cultural expression.
Although Ghanaian by nationality, Kambey spent much of his childhood and education within the francophone education system across several West African countries. Growing up between languages, cultures, and traditions gave him an appreciation for the diversity of the region and shaped a perspective that extends beyond national borders. He often describes himself as a third-culture West African, influenced as much by the region's shared cultural heritage as by any single country.
His fascination with creativity began through music. As a teenager, he aspired to become a music producer, captivated by the ability of sound to communicate emotion, identity, and culture. Over time, that interest expanded beyond music into the visual arts, where he became increasingly drawn to the stories, histories, and philosophies embedded within artistic expression.
Professionally, Kambey followed a different path. He studied engineering, developing a strong appreciation for mathematics, systems thinking, and research before building a career in finance, technology, startup funding, and strategic advisory. While these disciplines may appear distant from the arts, they profoundly shaped the way he approaches culture today. Rather than seeing art solely as individual objects or exhibitions, he became interested in the systems, institutions, and infrastructure that enable creative ecosystems to flourish.
This philosophy forms the foundation of Art Continum. Kambey believes that Africa possesses one of the world's richest artistic and cultural traditions, yet much of its creative heritage remains underdocumented, fragmented, and insufficiently connected to global audiences. Through thoughtful curation, research, storytelling, and technology, Art Continum seeks to provide the infrastructure that allows African culture to be better understood, preserved, and shared with the world.
As Chief Curator and Director, he leads the platform's editorial vision, research, and curatorial direction, exploring the continuum between traditional and contemporary African artistic practice. His work is driven by a belief that art should be experienced within its broader cultural context, revealing the histories, ideas, communities, and philosophies that give it meaning.
Ultimately, Kambey's ambition is not simply to present African art, but to help build the intellectual and institutional foundations that allow African culture to travel further, be understood more deeply, and occupy its rightful place within the global cultural conversation.
